raveling by Laurie Tanner
340 Delaware Avenue, Buffalo, NY 14202
OPENING RECEPTION: May 3rd 7-9PM
On view: April 15th - May 24th

raveling, is a solo exhibit of visual artwork consisting of mixed media collage and expressive oil paintings. This exhibit seeks to explore the creative process as a form of self-expression that chooses to unite the ethereal aspect of the artwork with the intangible language she responds to in the music she actively listens to. Each piece of artwork is created to a specific track of music that involves the lyricism of the track and/or as well as the tonality and composition of the music. The intent is to create a visual response to the selected music in a way that expresses the power of self-healing and self-reliance.

The band Varuna will accompany the show.

Studio Hart
Migration Measured: Works on Paper by Jody Hanson
65 Allen St., Buffalo, NY 14202
Studio Hart is proud to present a solo exhibition of works on paper by Buffalo-based artist Jody Hanson. Titled Migration Measured, the show will open with a reception for the artist Friday, May 3 from 6-9 pm as part of the Allentown First Fridays Gallery Walk, and continue through June 1.

"This collection of works on paper serves as a record of time passing. For the 'Live oil drawings', I apply machine oil to the paper; the resulting movement remains as the 'image', the 'image' being a combination of intended and uncontrolled factors," says Hanson. "Due to the nature of oil, which will never dry out, the migration continues throughout the life of the artwork, changing subtly over time."

Born in Champaign-Urbana, Illinois, Hanson currently lives and works in Buffalo. She received a BFA in Silversmithing and Jewelry Design from Indiana University and an MFA from the University of Illinois. Following school, Hanson lived in New York City where she worked as an art installer at several of the foremost contemporary art venues. In 1997 she moved to a studio in the artist enclave of Williamsburg, Brooklyn. It was at that juncture that she abandoned her work as a silversmith to explore new materials and forms of art making. These new works include the use of plexiglas, liquids, light projections and optics. Since 2000, she has been working with real-time moving images of light through liquid as well as works on paper that evoke a notion of the transitory.

In recent year Hanson’s work has been exhibited locally at Hallwalls, Indigo, Squeaky Wheel, Echo Art Fair, El Museo, Burchfield Penney Art Center, and the Albright-Knox Art Gallery (Collector’s Gallery). In 2010 she was chosen to participate in Beyond/In Western New York. Her work has also been featured in many New York galleries and art spaces such as the Alternative Museum, Schroeder Romero, and Gallery 402, as well as the New Jersey Center for Visual Arts, Parkland College in Champaign, IL, and Maine Artists Space in Portland, ME.

The Buffalo Niagara Art Association is an artistically diverse network of Western New York Artists bonded together to promote community understanding and interest in the visual arts. Originally known as the Amherst Society of Artists (founded in 1955), the Buffalo Niagara Art Association changed its name in 2006 to reflect the more diverse geographical areas in which members live.

Artistic styles within the group range from lyrical abstraction to realism, all at a high level of technical mastery.

BNAA organizes two exhibitions each year for members to exhibit their work in local galleries. In recent years the organization has exhibited at Kenan Center House Gallery, Market Street Art Center, Partners in Art Gallery, Artsphere Gallery, and this spring we return with great anticipation to the Art Dialogue Gallery, sponsored by the Western New York Artist Group.
